Writing The Next Chapter Class for the Holidays for Caregivers, December 13th, 2023

Writing the Next Chapter: Embracing Self-Care During and After Caregiving, Wednesday, December 13th at 7pm EST (FREE AND VIRTUAL)!

Join us online for a workshop where participants will walk away with written next steps, take-aways to help them along their path, self-care techniques and write a letter or poem to loved ones or themselves.

What to expect: In this 2-hour workshop, we will go through the journey as a caregiver, poems from Crying Tears of Teal and how it is helping many as a resource, a self-care inventory and look at easy ways that we can take better care of ourselves, do some mindfulness exercises and more.

Whether we are caring for a loved one due to illness, when they heal or unfortunately pass away; we are left with asking ourselves, “where do we go from here and what is next for me?” I lost both my younger sister and mother 2.5 years apart. While I was my mother’s caregiver when she had Ovarian Cancer, I took very good care of her, but lost sight of myself. I didn’t take care of myself, even down to the basics and after I lost her. My sense of purpose was blurry, and I needed help getting back on my path and even figuring out what my new path looked like. In this workshop we will explore my poetry book, Crying Tears of Teal which was partially written at my mother’s bedside and some take-aways from the book. We will look at where we are presently standing as caregivers or former ones, review our feelings and emotions, take a self-care inventory to see if we are taking care of ourselves (are we eating, going to the doctor, sleeping, working out) and start to look at what do we need and want for ourselves, what are our dreams and goals and what would our loved ones want for us now and in the future.”

Register below to save your seat and receive reminders for the event! Also, remember it’s FREE AND VIRTUAL!

Living Gluten Free

Living Gluten Free!

Over the past few years if you are like me you have heard more about gluten and celiac disease. I did not pay attention to it until I had to become gluten free due to medical conditions. So the first thing I asked my doctor was, “What the heck is gluten and why do I have to stay away from it?”

The easiest explanation I found was on the Mayo Clinic and it states, “A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes the protein gluten. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye).” In other words a lot of what I liked to eat (pasta, cookies, wheat bread, cakes, certain candy like Twizzlers, certain packaged meat, certain rice, oatmeal, etc…anything with enriched wheat flour) was no longer my friend. You can imagine how I felt in my doctor’s office after receiving this news. Although I don’t have celiac disease my gluten sensitivity was high based off of a saliva test I took. Also, because I have Chronic Lyme Disease I have to stay away from any foods that would cause inflammation in my body.

Gluten causes inflammation in the small intestines of people with celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine (I will go more in depth in a later article about the ins and outs of Celiac Disease). But gluten also causes inflammation with other diseases as well such as such as fibromyalgia, Type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and Lyme Disease. I even lessened the amount of gluten that my son intakes and it assisted with his inflamed adenoids. The inflammation went down when I switched his diet to no dairy and less gluten. Eating a gluten-free diet helps people with celiac disease and those listed control their signs and symptoms and prevent complications but is also helps others whether you are sick or not. There is a current debate about gluten free diets helping with weight loss. In my case it lessened the inflammation in my body and my numbers have gone down in my saliva test since I started a gluten free diet.

It is not easy to go from eating gluten every day to just stopping. Depending on your case of how fast you need to stop digesting it medical professionals would recommend that you wean off of it so your body won’t go into shock. I had to stop immediately. It was very hard because I had to change how I grocery shopped and ate. It was hard at first remembering what I could and could not eat. Even with the list that my doctor gave me I had to train myself on what to not buy anymore. Luckily there are grocery stores that have a list of items that are all gluten free and now food that is gluten free has a symbol on the package or will just list GLUTEN FREE on the package which makes it easier. I went from thinking I could only eat paper (kidding) and grass to knowing that I could eat a lot of food that was gluten free.

Can you instantly lose weight when going gluten free? The answer is no! For example, let’s say you stopped eating cereal, waffles, ice cream, pasta, etc., with gluten but substituted it for food that was gluten free. The only thing missing is the gluten, you still have the carbs and sometimes the high sugar. Losing weight is more than going gluten free, it all depends on the foods you buy and your physical activity. If you simply eat more veggies, fruits, beans, nuts and are more mindful as to how much you eat, then you can possibly lose weight. Finding a good work out that suits your body and stage of life you are in and even watch what kind of gluten free foods you purchase can help you lose weight.

A good list to start off with when going gluten free is the following:

Allowed foods:

  • Beans, seeds, nuts in their natural, unprocessed form
  • Fresh eggs
  • Fresh meats, fish and poultry (not breaded, batter-coated or marinated)
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy products and non-dairy products

Make sure that they are not processed or mixed with gluten-containing grains, additives or preservatives. Many grains and starches can be part of a gluten-free diet as well such as the following:

  • Amaranth
  • Arrowroot
  • Buckwheat
  • Corn and cornmeal
  • Flax
  • Gluten-free flours (rice, soy, corn, potato, bean)
  • Hominy (corn)
  • Millet
  • Quinoa
  • Rice (some rice has gluten so be careful and read the label)
  • Sorghum
  • Soy
  • Tapioca
  • Teff

Now the list you probably dread to read:

Avoid unless labeled ‘gluten-free’
In general, avoid the following foods unless they’re labeled as gluten-free or made with corn, rice, soy or other gluten-free grain:

  • Beer
  • Breads
  • Cakes and pies
  • Candies
  • Cereals
  • Cookies and crackers
  • Croutons
  • French fries
  • Gravies
  • Imitation meat or seafood
  • Matzo
  • Pastas
  • Processed luncheon meats
  • Salad dressings
  • Sauces, including soy sauce
  • Seasoned rice mixes
  • Seasoned snack foods, such as potato and tortilla chips
  • Self-basting poultry
  • Soups and soup bases
  • Vegetables in sauce

Also be aware of food additives, such as malt flavoring, modified food starch and others, medications and vitamins that use gluten as a binding agent and even Play dough.

There are even restaurants that have portions of their menus that are gluten free but still be careful and ask if they make the gluten free food in a different pan and that they clean off the surface well. Cross contamination can occur and that can make you very ill if you can’t digest gluten. This can also happen at home as well. Clean the surface and pots very well. Cross-contamination can also occur during the manufacturing process, for example, if the same equipment is used to make a variety of products. Some food labels include a “may contain” statement if this is the case. But be aware that this type of statement is voluntary.

Check the actual ingredient list and if you’re not sure whether a food contains gluten, don’t buy it or check with the manufacturer first to ask what it contains.

Another quick tip, just because it says its wheat free doesn’t mean it is gluten free. There may be other ingredients in the mix that contain gluten.

I hope I didn’t depress people who are thinking of going gluten free or have too. Just know you can still eat a healthy and hearty diet without gluten. If you need further assistance consult with a dietician or nutritionist. This article is for educational purposes and use only.

Check In for 2023 and a Health and Wellness Update

Peace, love and light everyone. My first blog post of 2023, sorry it’s taken so long, you’ll see why.

The week of January 30th, I made it out to the river!!!!!  One of my favorite places! Check out my video below. Do something this week that will make you smile, happy, calm, that includes self-love and self-care (exercising those are not selfish either). You could be outside or inside but if you can physically get out and it’s nice out, then get outside.

I love going to my places of peace and giving thanks. There’s a lot to be grateful for. I’m in a season where I am not trying to give the enemy my energy or the attacks that have taken place. I just know that something bigger, brighter and better is coming for me, my son, my special loved one, family and friends that choose to be on this positive trail with us. No negativity or past stuff allowed that is not going to serve us.

I got a lot done that week and on my list before Friday the 3rd as I was preparing for surgery. It was a priority to go to the river, meditate and pray. I’m so glad I made it out there. The sky was perfect, the river was calm, and peace washed over me. I prayed for my overall health and wellness, the doctors, surgeon (who is my amazing GYN doc), my son’s mental and emotional health because he was worried, my loved one who has been by my side and helping me from feeding me ice chips, tying my shoes, making me meals…I’m thankful.

Praying for all of those who are striving for better health and wellness. Getting a full hysterectomy was a huge step forward. Women shouldn’t have to suffer when it comes to fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal cells in the cervix (had those cells removed twice), cysts on and in ovaries (I dealt with all of this) which led to painful and long menstrual cycles.

Insurance has tried me for 8 years, year after year of denials, but in the end…I won and was approved to get a full hysterectomy through the DaVinci Surgery method. Thank you to those who’ve shared their stories, I went in not anxious and at peace. Now the healing begins. Resting and taking it very easy.

I know my Mom is happy up there. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 She had Ovarian cancer and lost her battle 13 years ago this month.

Much love to all of you. And if you have a health condition that needs to be addressed, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and as tiring as it is, keep fighting to get the approval you need to get what you need done. If you can’t advocate for yourself, then find someone who will be yours for you.

My prayer for you is that the blessings are going to be so abundant, the overflow is going to be magnificently poured out onto you this year and those who are around you who choose to accept the blessings, positivity and are worthy. We deserve it!!!! I’m ready for open door season!

Much love to all!

Allergy Season is Here! Quick Tips and Tricks to Help You Feel Better

Allergy Tips to Help You Survive this Season!

Disclaimer: I do not represent any of the brands show except for doTERRA in the role as a Wellness Advocate.

Allergy season is here! As I discussed on my page about essential oils, a few areas in the country are experiencing ragweed season!!! Ragweed is a weed that only lasts one season BUT, one plant can expel 1 billion pollen grains according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.  While others are enjoying watching the leaves turn colors and eventually falling, ragweed allergies are invading so many!

Here are some quick tips that I have found helpful that I have learned on my wellness journey from my doctors, nutritionist and research as a health and wellness coach.

  1. Neti Pot—Some people think it’s disgusting to flush your nose out and see water coming out of the other nostril, but the benefits of a Neti Pot are priceless if used right. You can buy them at any drug store like CVS, Walgreens, Target and even Wal-Mart. Most come with saline packets, and you must use distilled water or something of that nature. DO NOT use tap water. The benefits are great. It flushes out impurities, helps inflamed sinuses, clears out mucus and helps you breathe better.

  1. Air Filtration System—a lot suffer from those pollen grains coming through open windows and vents, dust mites, mold, recycled air through the dusty vents at work, school or even an apartment building. Purchasing one of these helps clean the air of a certain space you’re in. A person can breathe better as they inhale and exhale the air that is coming out of one of these systems. Each one has instructions on how much square footage it can cover. They come as small as ones that plug into your car and large that can help filter the air on one level of a house. A lot of retailers sell them. Change the filters 1-2x a year, the one below I own in my home and works well for our bedroom. Of course, cleaning your space and wiping down furniture of dust, cleaning the bathroom, making sure your carpets are cleaned if you own them, etc…will assist in allergy season as well.
Example of an Air Filter
  1. Cleaning Your Space—this is hard at places like work, but you can request for the vents to be professionally cleaned, even at home or school. If you have a doctor’s note they must comply according to regulations under OSHA. Also dusting your counter tops, desks, shelves, kitchens, bathrooms, etc with organic cleaning supplies and also shampooing the rugs is very beneficial. Meyer’s, Green Works and Nature’s Promise are just a few good brands. You can also make your own cleaning products. There are websites that can show you how. Check out the Environmental Working Group for products that are useful and those that are hazardous. This way if you buy an air filtration system it’s really going to kick in because you have gotten a lot of impurities removed.

  1. Supplement Usage—there are a variety of supplements, and one should consult a nutritionist or their doctor to see which ones would help with seasonal allergies. I love Bromelain/Quercetin. Bromelain is also found in pineapples and it a natural anti-inflammatory. The same with Quercetin. Naturally the two help your system calm down and such things as eczema (which I use to suffer from) go away or the rashes calm down because your system is not as inflamed.

  1. Essential Oils—there are tons out there, but I love Breathe by doTERRA, they are also other brands that carry Breathe. It has Eucalyptus, Peppermint oil and others in this blend that really open up your airways. You can add it topically or use a diffuser. You can check out my doTERRA essential oils and products page where I go into further depth about great oils to use for allergy season.

  1. Adopt a good diet—get rid of foods that inflame your system such as refined sugars, soda, juice like Hi-C, dairy, gluten, foods that aren’t organic, sweets and fried foods. Your body will thank you!

  1. Drink Lots of Water—water flushes out toxins, impurities and nasty gunk from your body. 64 ounces a day and if you are in need of more you can intake more depending on your medical condition or if you are an athlete. You also want to drink spring, filtered, distilled or alkalized water. Make sure the bottles are BPA free.

Using the above year-round will help you a great deal.

Other quick tips are to take off your shoes once entering your home, washing your face, hands and arms and anything else exposed to pollen, once you are in the house for the day, to place your clothes in the laundry and not sit on any furniture with those clothes on and wash your hair or wear it covered if you will be an area that has a lot of trees, weeds, bushes, etc. I’m not a doctor nor is this medical advice. The above has worked wonders for me but we are all uniquely built. Always consult your doctor, a health professional or nutritionist before starting any new regiment. Do your research as well. Hope you have a great season!
